Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for his portrayal of James Bond, died at the age of 89 in Switzerland, his family said on Tuesday.

On Twitter, his family said the actor died after a “a short but brave battle with cancer.” The family will organise a private funeral for him in Monaco, the statement said.

“Thank you Pops for being you, and being so very special to so many people,” the statement added. The family said Moore considered his work as a United Nations Children’s Fund ambassador to be his greatest achievement.

Moore was featured in seven of the James Bond films including Live and Let Die and the Spy Who Loved Me.
