The police said the TV celebrity had been absconding and trying to hide facts related to the case.
The Kolkata police on Friday arrested actor Vikram Chatterjee in connection with the death of model Sonika Chauhan in a car crash on April 29, The Times of India reported. The police said Chatterjee had been absconding and was trying to hide facts related to the case, which led to his arrest.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vishal Garg said they took Chatterjee into custody around Friday midnight near Acropolis Mall on the Rashbehari Avenue Connector. The court sent him to police custody till July 10, reported ANI.
Chatterjee was earlier charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a non-bailable section of the Indian Penal Code. He was also charged with dangerous driving.
The television actor was driving Chauhan home after a party around 3.30 am on April 29 when the car rammed into a pavement and flipped. While Chatterjee suffered injuries, Chauhan died in hospital.
The actor is believed to have been drunk when the accident took place, though he had denied the allegations. He later admitted to the police that he had consumed some alcohol, reported NDTV.
Various forensic and mechanical reports had suggested that Chatterjee was driving at a very high speed seconds before the accident.
