Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derails in Maharashtra, Railway Ministry says no one injured
Central Railway chief Public Relation Officer said a sudden landslide caused the accident.
The Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express got derailed between Vasind and Asangaon railway stations near Mumbai on Tuesday morning. The engine and nine of coaches went off the tracks, The Indian Express reported.
Initial reports had suggested that some people had been injured. However, the Ministry of Railways said on Twitter that there was no casualties so far. Central Railway chief Public Relation Officer said a sudden landslide caused the accident. The official said the train driver averted a bigger mishap by applying the emergency breaks on time, reported ANI.
“We are arranging buses to take the [stranded] passengers to their destination. Doctors and senior officers are already at the site,” the Central Railways tweeted. It said that all Mumbai local trains, which travel up to Asangaon or Kasara, were running only up to Titwala. The Railways also said that 31 trains were diverted, 15 cancelled & six re-scheduled due to the derailment.
The incident comes days after at least 74 people were injured as 10 coaches of the Kaifiyat Express got derailed near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh. On August 19, the Utkal Express went off the tracks near Khatuali in Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 23 people.
On August 24, Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu had offered to resign following the two train derailments. Prabhu said he took full responsibility of the unfortunate incidents, and had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his decision. “The honourable prime minister has asked me to wait,” he had said on Twitter.
