Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “deliver the justice that Tamil Nadu is seeking” on the Cauvery water dispute. In a video on Twitter, Haasan said Modi could use his “previous experience with the Narmada water board authority” to “deliver justice” to Tamil Nadu.

“Both pundits and pedestrians alike suspect and believe that this delay in us getting justice is due to the elections in Karnataka and your interest in them,” Haasan told Modi on Wednesday. “I want this belief to be dispelled, for people are more important than elections, as you well know.”

Haasan asked Modi to follow the Supreme Court judgement, and added that he would send the prime minister an open letter, “in case I have missed out any points in my anxiety”.

The Supreme Court had on February 16 ordered the Centre to set up a Cauvery Water Management Board within six weeks. On April 9, the top court rebuked the Centre for not following its orders and asked it to file its draft scheme on the implementation of the directive by May 3.

The Centre’s failure to constitute a Cauvery Water Management Board has led to major protests in Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, protestors tried to enter the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where an Indian Premier League match was scheduled.

Political parties have also protested against the Centre’s inaction. The ruling Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s legislators staged a hunger strike on April 2. The Opposition in the state had observed a shutdown on April 5. Actors like Hassan, Rajinikanth, Vijay, Vishal, Sivakarthikeyan, Udhaya and Aarthi Ganesh joined a day-long protest by the Tamil film industry body last week.
