Student activist and former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union Kanhaiya Kumar was on Sunday elected to the 126-member National Council of the Communist Party of India, PTI reported. S Sudhakar Reddy was elected the party’s general secretary for the third consecutive term.

Sunday was the fourth and last day of the party’s 23rd congress in Kollam, Kerala. Apart from the national council, members of the secretariat and control commission were also elected.

Senior leaders C Divakaran, Sathyan Mokeri, CN Chandran and Kamala Sadanandan are among those dropped from the National Council, The Indian Express reported.

Reddy, a two-time Lok Sabha MP, was first elected the general secretary of the party in 2012. After his re-election, he said the party calls for a broader unity of secular, democratic and Left forces to counter the right-wing organisations. He said the party wants to include Congress in its fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level.
