In a video that surfaced on social media, a group of people is seen assaulting a man and a woman for travelling together.
Two people were arrested in Assam’s Goalpara district on Friday after a video of a mob assaulting a couple surfaced on social media, PTI reported. Residents of Pukhurpur village allegedly forced the couple to get married.
The incident reportedly took place on June 17. In the video, a group of around 20 people are seen assaulting the couple for travelling together. The incident took place in Rongjuli area.
The brother of the man later claimed residents of Pukhurpur village had forced the couple to get married, the report added. “We have registered a suo motu case and arrested the accused visible in the video,” Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka told The Indian Express.
The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assaulting a woman with intent to disrobe and wrongful confinement.
In April, a group of men assaulted a 22-year-old woman travelling with a Muslim male friend in Goalpara district. The police arrested 12 people in the case. Days later, a mob allegedly stripped a woman and a man naked and beat them up in Baksa district of the state on suspicion that they had an affair.
