SFI’s student murder: Kerala Police consider invoking anti-terror law
The police said Abhimanyu’s killing was the result of a conspiracy.
The Kerala Police on Thursday said the murder of an undergraduate student of Ernakulam’s Maharaja’s College was the result of a conspiracy. Abhimanyu, a member of the Students’ Federation of India, was stabbed to death allegedly by members of the Popular Front of India’s student wing Campus Front.
The police said they will seek a legal opinion on whether they could file charges under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, PTI reported on Thursday.
Abhimanyu’s killers are not students of the college. They had earlier attacked Students’ Federation of India workers on the campus, Kerala Director General of Police Loknath Behera said. “Whether the UAPA will be attracted or not, we will take the legal opinion,” he added.
Four persons have been arrested so far. The police have detained several workers of the Popular Front of India and conducted raids at the offices and homes of some leaders and workers of its affiliate group, the Social Democratic Party of India.
The two student groups had previously clashed over campus graffiti early on July 2, leading to at least two students getting injured. In protest against Abhimanyu’s murder, the Students’ Federation of India called for a day-long boycott of classes across the state’s colleges the following day.
