As many as 537 people have died due to floods and rain this monsoon, says government body
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ National Emergency Response Centre said Maharashtra was affected the worst, with 139 deaths.
As many as 537 people have died in floods and rain in six states across the country during this monsoon season. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ National Emergency Response Centre said 139 people died in Maharashtra, 126 in Kerala, 116 in West Bengal, 70 in Uttar Pradesh, 52 in Gujarat and 34 in Assam, PTI reported on Saturday.
As many as 26 districts in Maharashtra, 22 in West Bengal, 21 in Assam, 14 in Kerala, 10 in Gujarat and several in Uttar Pradesh have been hit by rains and floods. In Assam, 2.17 lakh people are housed in relief camps.
A total of 1.61 lakh people have been affected by rains and floods in West Bengal. Four people are missing and 19 injured. In Kerala, 1.49 lakh people have been affected by the floods, and nine are missing. In Gujarat, 15,912 people have been evacuated to safer locations. In Maharashtra, 117 people have been injured and 68 in Uttar Pradesh.
Twelve teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Assam, eight in West Bengal, seven in Gujarat, four in Kerala, three in Maharashtra and seven in Uttar Pradesh, to carry out rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Yamuna river rose to 205.46 metres by Sunday morning, ANI reported. “Till now, 1,500 people have moved from low-lying areas,” a police officer said, adding that 550 tents have been pitched across 10 locations. “If more people need to be evacuated and accommodated, we have schools and night shelters available.”
