Bihar: Official arrested for allegedly sexually harassing women inmates at a short stay home
The police is on the lookout for four others accused in the case, including two women.
The Bihar Police arrested an official of the Vaishali district administration on Monday night in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of women at a short stay home, PTI reported on Tuesday.
Town police station inspector Om Prakash on Tuesday said that district project manager Manmohan Kumar Singh, who was arrested, was responsible for supervising the short stay home. The police are on the lookout for four others accused in the case. They include Priyanka, in charge of a women’s helpline, and her assistant Karuna Kumar, who have been accused of abetting the crime, said Om Prakash.
On July 19, District Magistrate Rajiv Raushan had received a complaint from those living in the short stay home, who accused Singh of harassment. Raushan then set up an inquiry committee. A report was submitted two days ago, after which a first information report was filed with the police.
The incident comes after the alleged sexual harassment and rape of 34 minor girls was reported from a state-run shelter home in Muzaffarpur district last month. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to consider framing a child protection policy, reported ANI. Last week, the Centre had asked all states and union territories to inspect childcare institutions and submit a report by September 15.
An arrest warrant has also been issued against Shibha Kumari Singh, the wife of suspended Child Protection Officer Ravi Roshan in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, reported ANI. She had allegedly revealed on social media the name and photographs of one of the minor victims.
In a similar incident in the state, the Patna Police on Monday arrested the manager and secretary of a shelter home for women with mental illnesses during an investigation into the deaths of two inmates at the facility. The police also booked a doctor and an auxiliary nurse midwife who worked at the shelter. Rajiv Nagar Police Station House Officer Rohan Kumar confirmed that a first information report was registered against the four accused on Sunday night.
