A Special Investigation Team of the Haryana Police on Sunday arrested two people in connection with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman in Mahendragarh district last week. As many as three men had allegedly raped the woman after kidnapping her while she was on her way to a coaching class.

One of the arrested man owned the tube well where the men allegedly sexually assaulted the student, NDTV reported. He is said to have given the place on rent to the main accused. The other arrested person is identified as Dr Sanjeev, who provided first-aid to the victim, Haryana Director General of Police BS Sandhu told ANI. “They have given a lot of information, we are working on that. Main accused will be arrested very soon,” he said.

Nuh Superintendent of Police Naazneen Bhasin is leading the investigation into the rape of the teenager, who had topped the Central Board of Secondary Education’s board examinations.

Following outrage against the crime, Rewari Superintendent of Police Rajesh Duggal was transferred. Rahul Sharma has taken over the post, ANI reported.

The woman’s father told reporters that while she has named three people in the complaint, around eight to 10 people may have sexually assaulted her. The three main accused, which includes an Army jawan, are still on the run.

Meanwhile, the woman’s family has returned a cheque of Rs 2 lakh which it received as compensation from the state government, NDTV reported. The complainant’s mother said the authorities have failed to arrest any of the accused for five days.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said it was an ‘unfortunate’ incident. “It’s unfortunate they [accused and the victim] knew each other,” he was quoted as saying by ANI. “It’s even more unfortunate that one accused is an Army personnel.”
