Hyderabad: Inter-caste couple attacked, allegedly by woman’s father
The father, absconding after the attack, has been booked for attempt to murder.
A newly-married couple was allegedly attacked by the woman’s father riding a bike in Hyderabad on Wednesday, reported The Indian Express. The woman, critically injured in the attack, has been admitted to a hospital. This comes days after a Dalit man was killed in front of his pregnant wife in Nalgonda.
Madhavi, 20, who is from an upper-caste family, married 21-year-old Sandeep a week ago, reported The News Minute. Both of them are college students. On Wednesday, they were on a stationary two-wheeler at a red light on Erragada main road when her father, Manohar Chari, allegedly attacked them with a sickle.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said that Chari spoke to his daughter in the afternoon and asked Sandeep to bring her near an automobile showroom. Chari arrived wearing a helmet to avoid being identified and started attacking Sandeep, said Kumar.
“As his daughter realised what was happening, she deflected Chari’s sickle aimed at Sandeep’s neck and it cut his cheek and right-hand side of his chest and he fell down,” said Kumar. “In spite of her left hand almost chopped off, Madhavi took on her father and pulled him down. Chari got up and attacked his daughter again, striking three times with the sickle and then fled.”
The police registered a case of attempted murder against Chari, who is absconding, reported ANI.
A friend of Sandeep’s told The News Minute that the couple got married a week ago in a temple. Both families had also been called to the SR Nagar police station for counselling after the marriage, but Chari had not objected then.
Last week, Perumalla Pranay was hacked to death in front of his pregnant wife Amrutha, who belongs to an upper-caste family, while they were leaving a hospital in Telangana’s Nalgonda district. The couple had eloped and got married in January as Amrutha’s family was against the relationship. A day after the murder, Amrutha blamed her father for the killing.
Seven persons, including Pranay’s father-in-law Maruthi Rao, have been arrested so far. Police on Wednesday said that six of them were sent to judicial custody for 14 days, reported PTI.
