Don’t want to watch Bhai as a wrestler this week? You actually have a choice. Two films are opening on July 6 to take advantage of the long weekend.
Sultan Ali Abbas Zafar’s critic-proof drama stars Salman Khan as the eponymous wrestler from Haryana who grapples and grunts his way to glory. A fictional story that has supposedly been drawn from real-life accounts, the movie also stars Randeep Hooda as Sultan’s coach and Anushka Sharma as his lover. Sultan’s director has a track record of delivering winning populist fare. His Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Gunday were moneyspinners for producer Yash Raj Films. Given the hype around Sultan and the strategic timing of its release – the very long weekend that starts with a bank holiday for Id on July 6 and extending all the way till July 10 release – this one is a box officer winner already.
The Secret Life of Pets Kudos to NBC Universal for daring to come out in the same week as a Bhai blockbuster and giving moviegoers a semblance of choice. Co-directed by Chris Renaud, one half of the duo behind the Despicable Me and Minions movies, this potentially zany animated movie features two pet dogs that unite against the evil machinations of a bunny army. The movie is packed with several furry wonders, including a Dachshund, a cat, a Pomeranian and a red-tailed hawk. The voice cast includes Kevin Hart, Louis CK and Steve Coogan.
