In a parody trailer of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, Daniel Day Lewis’s soft and contemplative voice is stitched together with visuals of Santa Claus and his reindeer. Titled Santa Thread, the bizarre yet appealing clip uses the soundtrack and lines from the trailer of Anderson’s December 25 release and sets them to scenes from the 1964 stop-motion animated Christmas special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
In the 96-second clip, uploaded by The Ringer, a pop culture website, Santa Claus’s carefully ordered life is disrupted by the arrival of a haughty reindeer, who becomes his muse and the guider of his sleigh.
If a film like Santa Thread were to be made, it would be a cheeky and dark addition to the mythos around the normally jovial Santa. Anderson would approve.
The real Phantom Thread, starring Day-Lewis and Vicky Kreps, is scheduled to be released in the select parts of the United States of America on Christmas ahead of a full release on January 19.
Set in 1950s post-war London, the movie chronicles the story of Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis), a renowned fashion designer whose carefully ordered life is disturbed when he meets Alma (Krieps), who becomes his muse and his lover.
Earlier this year, Day-Lewis announced that Phantom Thread would be his last film before retirement.
