Gymnastics: Japan’s Hashimoto Daiki and a gold that many are going be talking about for a while to come. It continues a wonderful tradition for Japan. Kohei Uchinura had claimed the gold medal in Rio 2016.

Gymnastics: A controversial moment. Daiki struggled on the vault but was still awarded 14.700. Could have been a big difference... so what do you think? Daiki messed up his landing big time.

Badminton: No 1 seed Kento Momota has been knocked out of the men’s singles badminton competition. He lost to South Korea’s Kwanghee Heo in straight games 21-15, 21-19. What a shock! What a big upset!

Dressage: Jessica von Bredow-Werndl of Germany was crowned Olympic dressage individual champion on Wednesday, ending British star Charlotte Dujardin’s nine-year reign. The 35-year-old posted a score of 91.732 percent after a sublime performance on TSF Dalera to add the gold to her team title. Her compatriot Isabell Werth took silver (89.657 percent) to extend her record haul of equestrian Olympic medals to 12. Dujardin – who won at London 2012 and Rio 2016 – may have lost her title but her face was wreathed in smiles as she took bronze on the inexperienced Gio with a score of 88.354 percent. The 36-year-old’s second bronze of the Games sees her move onto six career Olympic medals – the most by any British female athlete.

Swimming: Australia’s Emma McKeon fired a warning shot Wednesday with a new Olympic record in the women’s 100m freestyle heats, as storming South African Tatjana Schoenmaker clocked the second fastest 200m breaststroke time ever. The door to the sprint gold is wide open, with American defending champion Simone Manuel stunningly failing to qualify at the US trials. Manuel had dominated since Rio, winning back-to-back world titles, but missed crucial weeks in the lead-up to Tokyo after being diagnosed with overtraining syndrome, in which an athlete fails to recover adequately from training and competition.

Badminton and Guatemala: Guatemalan badminton player Kevin Cordon left home at 12 to pursue his Olympic dream – on Wednesday he was just “having fun” as he eliminated eighth seed Angus Ng Ka-long. World number 59 Cordon, appearing in his fourth Olympics, beat world number nine Ng 22-20, 21-13 in Tokyo, booking his place in the knockout round. The 34-year-old celebrated every point with a skyward roar and collapsed on the court when his fierce smash sealed the win.

Medals table: Japan on top!

History for the hosts: Japan’s Yui Ohashi secured an unprecedented golden double for the Olympic hosts with a win in the women’s 200m individual medley, less than two years after she considered quitting swimming because of depression. The unheralded Ohashi produced a strong finishing freestyle leg to touch the wall in 2min 08.52sec, ahead of Americans Alex Walsh on 2:08.65 and Kate Douglass in 2:09.04. It added to her triumph in the 400m medley on Sunday, making her the first Japanese woman to win two gold medals at a summer Games.

Basketball: The USA easily beat Iran 120-66 in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday to bounce back from their shock opening defeat – and players and coaches from the geopolitical rivals chatted afterwards. The Americans had their 25-game Olympic winning streak snapped by France in their first game but Damian Lillard scored 21 points and Devin Booker had 16 points in a straightforward win against the Iranians.

Quick round-up of India’s day: Turned out to be quite the day for India.

It didn’t start off very well as the women’s hockey team went down 1-4 to Great Britain. The team was simply unable to do enough with their chances and team coach Sjoerd Marijne called it their worst performance in the tournament so far.

But PV Sindhu spread some joy with a solid win over Cheung Ngan yi. The Indian was never really trouble and underlined her status as one of the top players in the world. Sai Praneeth, who had already been eliminated, lost in his final match too.

Then, it was mostly over to the archers and boxer Pooja Rani.

Deepika Kumari won a tight contest to move into the round of 16. But Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav (who beat the world no 2 before falling to the world no 1) bowed out in the round of 32.

Pooja Rani won easily to book her place in the quarterfinal, just one win away from a medal.

In the lightweight men’s double sculls, Arvind Singh/Arjun Jat Lal finished sixth in semi-final B.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic will play Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics after the world number one breezed past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. Djokovic continued his bid for a calendar Golden Slam by defeating the 34th-ranked Spaniard 6-3, 6-1 to extend his winning run to 21 matches. The Serb, a bronze medallist in 2008, is trying to emulate Steffi Graf’s 1988 feat of winning Olympic gold and all four Grand Slams in the same year.

Deepika Kumari through to round of 16: Made it closer than was ideal (for us, for her!) but Deepika Kumari gets the job done against the 18-year-old from USA who was making quite the impression. The Indian is through to the round of 16 scheduled for July 30. (Won’t know her opponent till tomorrow, likely to be 8th seed Ksenia Perova of ROC). And anyone’s worried about Deepika Kumari’s scores today (win is all that matters really), Kim Woojin is shooting sets of 27! And a whole bunch of top seeds have fallen so far in both genders. It was important she averted an upset herself today.

The Russian had a bad one, finishing 34th. Pravin was 31st. But Galsan is indeed ranked world No 2 at the moment. Also worth noting both among men and women the current world No 1s and 2s are not from Korea because they haven’t competed in the world cup circuit in 2021.

12.00 pm: More big news from gymnastics... Simone Biles won’t be defending her individual all-round title.

Defending champion Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final of the Olympic individual all-around gymnastics competition due to ongoing concerns over her mental health, USA Gymnastics confirmed on Wednesday.

“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

The US federation said a decision on whether Biles would compete in individual event finals would be taken following daily evaluation.

“Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals,” USAG added.

What emotion! Katie Ledecky wins the first-ever Olympic women’s 1500m final! It’s an event she has dominated over the years but it has only now been added to the Olympics. She also becomes the 4th female swimmer to win 6 Olympic golds.

Hockey recap: The Indian women’s hockey team lost 1-4 to defending champions Great Britain for their third defeat.The Indians were left to rue missed chances again as Hannah Martin (2nd and 19th minute), Lily Owsley (41st minute), Grace Balsdon (57th minute) scored for Great Britain to hand the reigning champions their second consecutive win in Pool A. For India, Sharmila Devi scored the lone goal in the 23rd minute.

India had earlier lost 1-5 to world no.1 the Netherlands before slumping to a 0-2 defeat against Germany. India will next play Ireland on Friday. Two wins in the next matches *should* still be enough finish in top four.

Badminton recap: Reigning world champion P V Sindhu advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of women’s singles badminton event at the Tokyo Olympics after beating Hong Kong’s NY Cheung in a group J match. The 26-year-old Indian, who had claimed a silver medal in the last edition in Rio, prevailed over world No. 34 Cheung 21-9 21-16 in a 35-minute match to top the group. This was Sindhu’s sixth win over Cheung in as many meetings.

Zenia D’Cunha about the archery match: Another near miss for India! Almost everything was lined up for Tarundeep Rai. against a rookie in Itay Shanny. He had just beaten one of the favourites Muto Hiroki but was still a newcomer. The veteran Indian fought back in both matches & had his chances.... only to lose the shoot-off as his opponent hit 10 on the 1 arrow that mattered. It’s the little margins!

Ashish Magotra: Sindhu through to round of 16: Another very solid showing by the sixth seed. She cruised through the first game to take it 21-9. The second game was different – there was almost nothing to separate the two right up to final quarter of the game. But that is when the Indian stepped it up, opened up a lead and closed it out without fuss. Just the way you expect the top players to play. She has that quality about her now.

Twice the Indian was one arrow away from losing the match, twice Hunbin could have sealed the deal but he the Indian hangs in and takes the last two sets to progress. Came up with 2 huge 10s in the last set! A terrific performance under pressure. His next round? Israel’s Itay Shanny who had knocked out Japan’s star Muto Hiroki, the 5th seed. Coming up shortly.

Set 4: BIG REPRIEVE FOR RAI! He has to redraw with seconds left on the clock to start the set but gets a 8, follows that with a 8 again. He nails a 10 with his third! Pressure on Hunbin, who needed only 9 o 10 to win this match. And he hits a 7! Set to India 26-24, and it’s 4 points all!

First of all, it’s a later start today per Indian Standard Time, so that’s a few more minutes of sleep. Secondly, today there are no medal events lined up today for Indian athletes...but significant steps will be (may be) taken towards one.

It was a day of heartbreaks for Indians on Tuesday, let’s see what Wednesday has in store.
