Spain on Sunday defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 men’s football world cup in New Jersey, United States.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to deny the title defence to 10-man Argentina.

Argentine Enzo Fernández was sent off by the referee for a late tackle on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.

Spain’s Rodri beat Argentine captain Lionel Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappé to win the Golden Ball, the award for the best player of the tournament.

Mbappé, with 10 goals, was awarded the Golden Boot for the highest number of goals in the tournament.

Spain’s Unai Simón was awarded the Golden Glove for best goalkeeping.

Mikel Oyarzabal was Spain’s highest scorer in the tournament with five goals.

Spain had drawn their opening group stage match against Cape Verde before defeating Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. The team beat Austria in the Round of 32 and neighbour Portugal in the Round of 16, before defeating Belgium in the quarter-final.

The La Roja, as the team is called by its supporters, had defeated France in the semi-final.

This is Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, having won it in 2010.

The country had then entered the final on a 37-match unbeaten streak.
