Telangana: More than 1,000 evacuated as flood alert is issued across state
Weather officials predicted heavy rain in several areas for the next four days.
More than 1,000 people have been evacuated in a rescue and relief operation in Karimnagar, Telangana, after heavy rain led to the Godavari river flooding several parts of the state, PTI reported on Monday. Weather officials have issued a flood alert for the entire region, including neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, which has also been affected by flooding. Officials predicted heavy rainfall for the next four days, The News Minute reported. Officials said the evacuation was a precautionary measure conducted by the National Disaster Response Force.
The area was inundated after water from the under-construction Mid Manair Dam started overflowing from the bund. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has directed members of his government to monitor the situation and take appropriate action. Rao said all projects in Godavari basin were full to the brim.
At least 11 people have died in flood-related incidents in the state. Four Indian Army columns have reportedly been deployed in rain-affected areas of Hyderabad and neighbouring Ranga Reddy district.
