A former Merchant Navy officer, Rahul Matta, allegedly stabbed his father Ravinder to death over 30 times, attacked his mother and others in an incident that led to at least nine police personnel sustaining injuries in Delhi on Sunday, The Times of India reported. He has been detained and is undergoing treatment at a hospital, officials said.

Officials said the accused first attacked the guard on duty at his parent’s residential complex, after he was refused entry into the premises on account of a ban imposed on him by the local residents’ welfare association a few months ago, Hindustan Times reported. Unidentified neighbours told the newspaper that the attacker was prone to violence and he had served prison sentence in Canada, where he used to work before he was dismissed. He is also believed to have assaulted a woman in 2016.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police Omvir Bishnoi said, “The deceased, identified as R P Matta, a retired finance sector employee, had recently come back from Canada, and had disowned his son Rahul. He had also got his son banned from entering the society where he lived,” The Indian Express reported.

The Times of India report said CCTV footage showed Matta attacking another neighbour before entering another apartment, where he allegedly turned a liquefied petroleum gas stove on and triggered a blast. NDTV reported that his father had released a notice in the newspapers disowning Rahul Matta. His parents reportedly disapproved of his recent marriage.
