A day after news reports claimed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was likely to undergo a surgery, he confirmed on Thursday that he is being treated for “kidney-related problems”. Jaitley said he was working from a “controlled environment” at home.

“I am being treated for kidney-related problems [and] certain infections that I have contracted,” Jaitley wrote on Twitter. “The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me.”

Jaitley also cancelled his visit to London for the annual India-United Kingdom economic dialogue next week as doctors have advised him rest, IANS reported.

The 65-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party leader was brought to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday afternoon for “finishing formalities for a donor kidney”, The Hindu reported.

Doctors advised him to not go out in public to avoid an infection, according to The Wire. The report added that this was the reason he was unable to take the oath in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, along with other newly-elected members of the Upper House.

Jaitley was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the fourth consecutive time last month. He had contested from Uttar Pradesh. He was re-elected the Leader of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The Union minister suffers from chronic diabetes and had undergone a surgery for weight reduction in September 2014.
