Arun Jaitley returns as finance minister after three-month break post surgery
He underwent a renal transplant operation on May 14.
Arun Jaitley will resume charge of the Union Finance Ministry on Thursday, after being away for almost three months following a kidney transplant. In his absence, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was the interim finance minister.
“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed to assign the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs to Arun Jaitley,” said a press statement from the President’s office.
Jaitely had stopped attending office in April ahead of a renal transpant on May 14.
Jaitley’s first public appearance in three months was in the Rajya Sabha on August 9 to elect the deputy chairperson. During his break, Jaitley was vocal on social media, defending the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government on several matters, including the Rafael deal, Assam’s National Register of Citizens and the economy.
