Sharad Pawar, Virat Kohli, Dipa Karmakar among 2017 Padma award winners
NRIs, including AIDS researcher late Suniti Solomon, artist Imrat Khan and Nepal-based social worker Anuradha Koirala are among the Padma Shri awardees.
Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi, cricketer Virat Kohli, Olympic winner Sakshi Malik, paralympic gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu and acclaimed gymnast Dipa Karmakar are among the 2017 Padma awardees that were announced on Wednesday. This year, there were seven Padma Vibhushan awardees, as many Padma Bhushan recipients and 75 Padma Shri winners.
Pawar and Joshi are among the Padma Vibhushan recipients this year, along with spiritual guru Jaggi Vasudev, scientist UR Rao, singer KJ Yesudas, late Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma and late Madhya Pradesh chief minister Sunder Lal Patwah. Among the Padma Bhushan winners were maestro Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, yogi Niranjana Nanda Saraswati and political analyst-cum-journalist late Cho Ramaswamy. The list of Padma Shri awardees featured 75 names, including Kohli, Malik, Karmakar, hockey player PR Sreejesh and discus thrower Vikas Gowda.
Non-resident Indians, including AIDS researcher late Suniti Solomon, surbahar artist Imrat Khan and Nepal-based social worker Anuradha Koirala are among the Padma Shri recipients. Film critic Bhawana Somaaya, kalaripayattu exponent Meenakshi Amma and singers Kailash Kher and Anuradha Paudwal will also be given this honour.
There will be no Bharat Ratna recipient this year. Tamil Nadu’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had earlier asked the Centre to give the award to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5. The Madras High Court had dismissed the plea, saying that such decisions were made by the committee relegated with the job.
